Battlefields and Zulu History Tours

Zulu dancers in the home of King Shaka, KZN

The beautiful KwaZulu Natal ( KZN) Province, known as the "Zulu Kingdom" has had a colourful, if at times, turbulent, history. It was here that the legendary King Shaka was born and grew up to build the Zulu nation into one of the strongest and most feared peoples in Southern Africa.

Key highlights are...

  • Home of the Zulu nation
  • Isandlwana
  • Rorke’s Drift
  • Ulundi
  • Anglo Boer War

In the beautiful eMakhosini (Place of the Kings ) valley lie the graves of the seven Zulu Kings prior to King Shaka. An Afrikaner Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and some of his followers also lie buried in the valley, as does another Afrikaner leader Pieter Uys, and his son Dirkie.

Experience a "snapshot" of traditional Zulu lifestyle by spending a night at one of the lodges providing a taste of the cultural life of the rural Zulu village. These lodges provide comfortable and romantic accommodation and portray an accurate interpretation of Zulu traditional culture.

Many sites of historical significance are to be found in the Zulu Kingdom.

Anglo-Zulu battlefield sites such as Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift and the Battle of Ulundi – scene of the final defeat of King Cetshwayo’s forces – are just some of the many fought.

Some significant battles of the Anglo Boer wars such as Talana, Majuba, Colenso and Ladysmith were also contested in this province.
