




In the beautiful eMakhosini (Place of the Kings ) valley lie the graves of the seven Zulu Kings prior to King Shaka. An Afrikaner Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and some of his followers also lie buried in the valley, as does another Afrikaner leader Pieter Uys, and his son Dirkie.

Anglo-Zulu battlefield sites such as Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift and the Battle of Ulundi – scene of the final defeat of King Cetshwayo’s forces – are just some of the many fought.
Some significant battles of the Anglo Boer wars such as Talana, Majuba, Colenso and Ladysmith were also contested in this province.
